- Go for a walk
Just 20 minutes a day is all it takes. Walk tall, as an upright posture is directly linked to your upbeat mood. Not only will your fitness improve, you may find any unwanted pounds begin to drop off too.
- Smile more
Smile right now while you’re reading these words. How does it change the way you feel in this moment?Do you feel ever so slightly more upbeat? You can smile anywhere at any time, on your own or in company.Give it a go for just one minute at a time at least five times a day.Smiling deliberately or otherwise has been proven to massage the pituitary gland which releases serotonin, also known as the “happy hormone”.
- Get more sleep
Upbeat people tend to have more energy. It’s amazing how many of us deprive ourselves of sleep and are surprised at how exhausted we feel. So make sure you get enough shut-eye.Energy levels rise and fall naturally during the day. A short rest can be the perfect pick-me-up and a 10-minute power nap may be just what you need. If you’re at work, find somewhere you can sit quietly for a few minutes.
- Drink more water
Water is the most underrated magic ingredient for a more upbeat life. Between 55-75 per cent of the human body is made up of water and around three-quarters of the brain is water. If the body is dehydrated the brain will not be performing at its best and this affects our mood.Make water your drink of choice rather than relying on tea, coffee or alcohol to lift you up. Caffeine and alcohol have a diuretic effect flushing water out of our bodies before it’s had the opportunity to be absorbed.
- Breathe deeply from the abdomen
Set aside a few minutes three times a day to inhale deeply through your nose, drawing in your abdomen, for a count of three before exhaling all the air through your mouth for a count of five. Repeat 10 times. Each time you breathe out imagine you are breathing out negative thoughts and emotions. Each time you breathe in imagine you are breathing in calmness and tranquillity.
